Six services, each with a session length and a price

Every price below applies to the session length printed beside it. There are no registration fees, no monthly contracts and no bundles beyond the eight-session exam block, and online lessons cost the same as lessons in person. Nothing on this page adds an item to a cart or holds a lesson time.

S-01

One-to-one maths tutoring

$85 a session

A sixty-minute lesson with one tutor and one learner, working from the course the learner is actually taking, from Grade 6 pre-algebra through algebra, geometry, precalculus and AP Calculus. Each lesson starts from the homework or the last test that went wrong, works through the idea behind it on paper, and ends with a short set of practice problems chosen for the week ahead. A written note of what was covered goes to the family after every session.

Best for a learner in Grade 6 to Grade 12 following a school maths course who wants steady weekly help with it.

Usual timing sixty minutes, weekly or fortnightly, in the Columbus study room or online.

Included

Sixty minutes with the same tutor each week, working from the learner’s own course material
A short written session note and a practice set for the week ahead

Not included completing graded homework or take-home tests on the learner’s behalf, which Quillfield does not do in any subject.

S-02

SAT and AP exam preparation

$640 for eight sessions

A block of eight sixty-minute sessions built around one named exam: the SAT Math or Reading and Writing section, or a single AP course such as Calculus AB, Biology, Chemistry or English Literature. The block opens with a timed diagnostic taken from official practice material, sets out which question types are costing the most time, and spends the middle sessions on those. The last two sessions are full timed sections under exam conditions, reviewed question by question. The block describes what will be practised, not the score that will follow: no tutor can promise a result on a test written and marked by someone else.

Best for a high-school learner with a fixed test date between six and twelve weeks away.

Usual timing eight sessions of sixty minutes, one or two a week, finishing before the test date.

A timed diagnostic from official practice material, reviewed in the first session
A written study plan naming the question types to work on, in order
Two full timed sections in the final week, reviewed question by question
A short summary email to the family at the halfway point and at the end

Not included the exam registration fee, which is paid to the College Board directly, and any promise of a particular score.

S-03

Reading and writing support

$75 a session

A fifty-minute session on reading comprehension, essay structure, grammar or a specific written assignment, for learners from Grade 3 upwards. Younger readers work on fluency and on saying back what a passage meant; older learners plan an essay from thesis to conclusion and revise a draft they wrote themselves. The tutor comments on the draft and asks questions about it, but the words on the page stay the learner’s own.

Best for a learner whose reading or writing is holding back work in every other subject.

Usual timing fifty minutes, weekly, in person or online.

Not included writing, rewriting or editing an essay that will be submitted for a grade.

Science tutoring

$90 a session

A sixty-minute lesson in middle-school science, high-school biology, chemistry or physics, or an introductory college course in any of the three. Sessions work from the learner’s syllabus and lab handouts: a concept is drawn out on the board, a worked problem is solved together, then a second one is solved by the learner alone while the tutor watches. Where a topic depends on maths the learner has not yet met, the tutor says so and teaches that step first rather than skipping past it.

Best for a learner taking a lab science whose units build quickly on one another.

Usual timing sixty minutes, weekly, with an extra session before a unit test where the timetable allows.

A short set of practice questions with the answers explained

Not included writing lab reports or completing graded lab work for the learner.

S-05

Study skills and planning

$70 a session

A forty-five-minute session on how to study rather than what: turning a syllabus into a weekly plan, breaking a long project into dated pieces, taking notes that can be revised from, and using short practice tests instead of re-reading. The first session builds a written week-by-week plan from the learner’s real deadlines; later sessions check that plan against what actually happened and adjust it. Many families book four sessions at the start of a term and stop once the routine holds.

Best for a middle- or high-school learner, or an adult returning to study, who keeps running out of time before tests.

Usual timing forty-five minutes, weekly for four weeks, then as needed.

A written term plan built from the learner’s own syllabus and test dates
A note-taking and revision method practised on a real chapter
A check on the plan at each following session

Not included subject teaching, which is booked as maths, science or reading and writing tutoring instead.

S-06

Starting assessment and written plan

$120

A ninety-minute first meeting for a new learner, split between a conversation with the family about school, goals and what has already been tried, and a short set of untimed tasks in the subject that matters most. It is not a clinical or diagnostic assessment and does not replace one; it is a tutor’s working view of where the learner is and what to do first. Within three working days the family receives a written plan naming a recommended service, a weekly pattern and the first four topics.

Best for a family that is not yet sure which subject, how often, or which tutor.

Usual timing ninety minutes, once, with the written plan inside three working days.

Not included educational psychology testing or any formal diagnosis, and no commitment to book further sessions.

School-year calendar

The points in the school year the six services are planned around

AugAutumn term begins. Most starting assessments are booked in the first three weeks.
OctFirst written progress review to each family, after about eight lessons.
DecMid-year review of each plan before the winter break.
MarSAT and AP preparation blocks begin for spring and early-summer test dates.
MayAP exam season. Timed practice replaces new material.
JunEnd-of-year review and an optional summer plan.

Test dates are set by the school district or the College Board, not by Quillfield, and are confirmed with each family against the published calendar rather than assumed from this list.

Reading the calendar

Two of the six services follow these points closely. SAT and AP exam preparation is timed back from a test date, and the starting assessment is most often booked in August or January. Maths, science and reading and writing run weekly through the term, and study skills is usually booked at the start of one.

A month on this list is a planning point, not an appointment. Nothing on this page holds a lesson time.

03 · Process

How contact works

Send the form or write

Name the service, the learner’s grade and the course. The form asks for a name, an email address, an optional telephone number, the service, the learner level and a message of at least twenty characters.

Receive a written reply

A reply arrives by email or telephone during opening hours, Monday to Friday between 12:00 PM and 8:00 PM or on Saturday morning. It names a suitable tutor and the weekly times that tutor has open.

Agree a time, then start

Lessons begin once the tutor, the weekly time and the service are agreed in writing. The published price applies to the session length printed beside it.

04 · Suitability

If two services look equally suitable

Which service fits depends on the learner’s course, grade and the time left before the next test, so the descriptions alone cannot settle every case. When two options read the same way, name both in the contact form with a sentence about the learner, and Quillfield will say which one fits and why. A family that is still unsure can book the starting assessment, which exists for exactly that question.
