Eight photographs, in the order the work runs

Four parts, eight plates: the first conversation, the planning done between meetings, the rooms where meetings happen, and the plan that is handed over. Each caption says what is in the frame and why it is worth looking at.

01 — First meeting

What a client brings, and how it is written down.

A hand holding a gold pen over a white laptop keyboard, with a notebook, a phone and a small plant on the desk beyond.
A gold pen resting over a laptop keyboard beside a notebook and a phone. Statements now arrive as downloads far more often than paper, and each one is read in full before any figure from it is used.
An open blank notebook, a yellow pencil, a pair of glasses and a black phone on a white desk beside a laptop.
An open blank notebook with a pencil, glasses and a phone on a white desk. The first meeting starts from a clean page: goals are written down before any account is discussed.

02 — Planning

Where the scenarios are worked through.

An office corridor with a timber-clad wall and a black-framed glass partition looking into a meeting room.
A corridor running past a glass-walled meeting room lined with timber. Much of the planning work happens between meetings, when scenarios are modelled and assumptions checked.

03 — Meeting rooms

The light the figures are read in.

A bright meeting room with white tables, navy chairs on wooden legs and two whiteboards on a white wall.
A bright meeting room with two white tables, navy chairs and two whiteboards. Scenarios are sketched on the boards so everyone in a household sees the same figures at the same time.

04 — Handoff

The last read of a plan, the final copy, and the table it is handed over at.

A close view of a fountain pen nib writing in ink on lined paper.
A fountain pen writing on ruled paper, the nib casting a sharp shadow. A plan is signed off only after the client has read its assumptions and asked about them.
Two hands typing on a black keyboard, with a black mouse in focus in the foreground of a desk.
Hands at a keyboard with a mouse in the foreground. The final plan is typed up from the meeting notes and sent by the date agreed in the scope.
The trading floor of a stock exchange, a circular ticker band of stock codes running around a glazed drum under a vaulted ceiling.
An exchange floor with its ticker band running around the drum. Markets move daily; a plan is reviewed on a set date, not on the day the tape turns.
