01 The first service

Introductory visit

no charge

A short first visit that settles which service suits the visit being planned, and what it costs. It runs twenty minutes in a quiet corner of the front room, with the booking diary open on the table. The spa director describes what each of the other five services involves, how long it takes and what it costs, and then names the one that fits; if none of them does, that is said plainly. Nothing is reserved during the twenty minutes unless a guest asks for a date there and then, and the visit carries no charge either way.

Best for a first visit, including one where two services look equally suitable.

The five that follow

• 02

  Cedar Hollow signature massage

  $110 / $155

  Full-body massage at a pressure agreed at the start and adjusted on request. The room is warm and low-lit, the table is made up under a blanket, and any music playing has no words in it. The therapist agrees the pressure before starting, checks it again partway through, and changes it at any point a guest asks. The hour covers back, shoulders, arms, legs and feet; the ninety-minute booking spends the extra half hour on whichever of those a guest names at the start. It ends with a few minutes alone in the room to dress, and water on the way out.

  Best for a full-body session where the pressure matters.

  • Sixty or ninety minutes on the table, with the oil named beforehand
  • Pressure agreed before the session starts and checked again partway through
  • A few minutes alone in the room at the end to dress

  Not included

  No facial, scrub or sauna time is part of either length.

• 03

  Warm stone back and shoulders

  $95

  Smooth basalt stones warmed in water, worked across the back and shoulders with the hands. The stones sit in a water bath beside the table and each one is tested on the therapist’s own forearm before it touches a guest, with a cloth between stone and skin until the heat has settled. A guest lies face down with the back and shoulders uncovered and the rest of the body under a sheet throughout. The stones are set aside for the last few minutes, which are worked with the hands alone, and the session ends with a few minutes alone in the room to dress.

  Best for a shorter session kept to the back, shoulders and neck.

  No full-body work; the stones go nowhere but the back, shoulders and neck.

  Hydrating facial

  $120

  A cleanse, a gentle exfoliation, a mask and a finishing cream, chosen for the skin on the day. The skincare lead looks at the skin first rather than working to a fixed routine, names every product before it is used, and writes down anything a guest asks to keep off the face. A guest lies on a covered table with the hair wrapped, and the mask sits for about ten minutes while the hands and forearms are worked. The room stays warm and low-lit, and the hour ends with the face wiped clear and the finishing cream left on.

  Best for an hour on the face, with each product named as it goes on.

  No needles, devices or skin procedures of any kind form part of this hour.

• 05

  Sea salt body polish

  $98

  A salt and oil scrub applied by hand, rinsed in the treatment room’s own shower. The room is set out before a guest arrives, with the shower run warm and towels, robe and slippers folded within reach. The scrub goes on section by section — back, arms, legs — while everything else stays covered, and a guest then steps straight into the shower in the same room to rinse it off. The last few minutes are for drying and dressing without hurry, and the floor is dried and the room reset before anyone else comes in.

  Best for a shorter session that ends with a rinse rather than oil left on the skin.

  • A salt and oil scrub applied by hand, section by section
  • A rinse in the treatment room’s own shower
  • Towels, a robe and slippers set out before a guest arrives

  Not included

  No massage follows the rinse, and no wrap or mask is added.

• 06

  Sauna and quiet room

  $65

  Unbooked time in the cedar sauna and the quiet room, with tea and water available. A guest is shown the locker, the robe and the shower at the start, and then uses the ninety minutes in whatever order suits: the cedar sauna with its slatted bench, the shower between sittings, and the quiet room with its six chairs. The quiet room is kept free of conversation and any music playing has no words in it. Nobody comes to collect a guest until the ninety minutes are up.

  Best for unhurried time with nobody else in the room.
