Before the stencil

Price: $40

Design consultation

Half an hour at the counter with whatever reference has been brought in, the placement on the body and the size the piece has to work at. An artist draws a thumbnail while the conversation is happening, says what the work would cost and how many sittings it needs, and the fee comes off the first of them.

What the appointment includes

  • A thumbnail drawn while you talk
  • Placement and size agreed on the body
  • A written price and a sitting count

Worth knowing: The fee is taken off the first sitting and is not refunded if no sitting is booked.

About 45 minutes Best for a first piece, or for an idea that has never been drawn at the size it has to be worn.

From the sheets

Price: $180

Flash piece

A design taken straight off one of the studio's own flash sheets, at the size it was drawn for. The line weight, the sitting length and the price are all known before a needle is opened, because the drawing already exists and nothing about it is being worked out on the day.

What the appointment includes

  • A design chosen from the studio sheets
  • The stencil placed and approved before the first line
  • Aftercare written down before you leave

Worth knowing: A flash design is not redrawn to a new size or a new placement at this price — that is a half-day sitting.

About 90 minutes Best for a small piece where the drawing is already right and only the placement is being decided.

Custom work

Price: $520

Half-day sitting

A single booked block for custom work drawn for this piece and no other. The stencil is placed and approved on the skin before anything starts, and the block is worked with a break written into the middle of it. The block ends when the time ends rather than when the drawing does.

What the appointment includes

  • Artwork drawn for this piece only
  • The stencil placed and approved on the skin
  • A break written into the middle of the block

Worth knowing: A piece that needs more than one block is quoted as more than one block at the consultation, not discovered halfway through.

About 4 hours Best for custom work that has been drawn at the consultation and sized to one sitting.

The long sitting

Price: $960

full-day rate

Full-day sitting

The same custom work booked as a whole day, with the chair held for one person from opening to close. A large piece is laid out across the day in sections and each section is finished before the next one begins, so a day that has to stop early stops on a finished edge rather than in the middle of one.

What the appointment includes

  • The chair held for one person all day
  • Artwork drawn for this piece only
  • Two breaks and food written into the day
  • Each section finished before the next starts

Worth knowing: It is one booking for one day and the rate does not change if the piece finishes early.

About 8 hours Best for a back, a sleeve or any piece that would otherwise be split across several half-days.

Over old work

Price: $260

Cover and rework

Existing work is looked at first, in daylight, and the honest answer comes before the price does. Some pieces cover cleanly, some need lightening elsewhere before anything can go over them, and some read better reworked than buried. The quote follows that answer rather than the other way round.

  • The existing work assessed in daylight
  • A drawn option for covering or reworking it
  • A written quote before anything starts

Worth knowing: The studio does not carry out laser removal, and will say when lightening is needed before a cover can work.

About 3 hours Best for older work that has blurred, or for a piece that no longer reads the way it was meant to.

After it heals

Price: $60

Touch-up sitting

A short sitting once a piece has healed, to put back any line or shading that lifted while the skin was settling. It is booked at the end of the sitting the piece came from, four to six weeks ahead, because that is when the skin has finished moving and not before.

What the appointment includes

  • Booked four to six weeks after the piece
  • Lines and shading put back where they lifted
  • Aftercare gone over a second time

Worth knowing: The first touch-up on the studio's own work is included in the price of the piece; this is the rate for anything after that.

About 30 minutes Best for a healed piece from this studio that has settled unevenly in one or two places.

Before the needle

How getting in touch works

  1. Describe the piece

    A message says what the piece is, roughly where it sits on the body and how big it has to be. Reference is welcome and never required; a description in words gets the same straight answer a picture does.

  2. Read the reply

    An artist answers by email or telephone during opening hours, names the service that fits, states the price and says how many sittings the piece needs.

  3. Agree a time

    The time is fixed in that reply, or through the Book action if a slot is being chosen directly. Nothing earlier in the sequence holds a chair.

When a service is not the right one

An artist who can see the placement in front of them will say when a chosen service is the wrong fit and name the one that is, before starting. That happens at the chair and it happens in the reply to a message. Nothing gets started on a service that will not work, and nothing gets charged for a service that was not carried out.

Ironline Tattoo Studio does not tattoo anyone under the age of eighteen, does not carry out laser removal, permanent cosmetics or piercing, and does not carry out any treatment that belongs with a medical practitioner.
