A four-chair room on Cushman Street, and time booked honestly

Fernway & Slate occupies a single ground-floor room on Cushman Street: four chairs, a wash bar and a colour bench, with appointments booked for the time the work actually takes.

The salon took the ground floor of a Cushman Street building in 2019, kept the tall windows and the original floor, and fitted four chairs where the room would have held six. That spare space is why a colour service and a cut can run side by side without either being hurried.

Everything else follows from the appointment book. A service is booked for the time it genuinely takes, a consultation happens before a first colour rather than after it, and a stylist who thinks a request will not suit the hair in the chair says so while there is still time to choose something else.

Three things the salon holds to

  • The quoted price is the price

A figure confirmed at the consultation is the figure at the desk. If the hair turns out to need more product or more time, the salon says so before the work starts, not after it.

  • One stylist, one appointment

The person named on the booking does the work from the consultation to the finish. Nobody is handed over halfway through a colour.

  • A plain no is an answer

If a request would damage the hair or will not hold, the salon explains why and offers the nearest thing that will. Declining the work is treated as part of the service.

The four steps between an enquiry and a finished appointment

  1. Step 1

    Enquiry

The contact form or the telephone. A preferred stylist can be named; availability is confirmed separately.

  2. Step 2

    Consultation

Twenty minutes in the chair, dry then damp. Condition, growth patterns and any previous colour, written down at the end.

  3. Step 3

    Booking

The chair is held for the full length of the service, including development and toning time where colour is involved.

  4. Step 4

    Appointment and aftercare

The service runs to the time set aside, and the finish is shown as it would be repeated at home.

What this website does

This site publishes the salon’s services, prices, hours and people, and carries a contact form. It does not confirm an appointment. The Book action sends the visitor to the salon’s configured booking destination, and a date is only ever confirmed by the salon directly.

Start with a consultation

It costs nothing, commits nobody, and ends with a written note of what was discussed.

New work, occasionally

An email when new plates go up on the wall or a chair opens. No fixed schedule, and one link in every message removes an address from the list.
