“The consultation was the whole difference. I was asked how I dry it in the morning, which nobody in twenty years had thought to ask, and the cut was built around that answer instead of around a photograph on a phone. It was finished dry as well, so the shape I walked out with on the Friday was still the shape I had on the Monday, without me doing anything clever to it.”

The shop
A corner barbershop on Sable Street
Sable & Fourth Barbers is a neighbourhood barbershop in Richmond, Virginia, where four barbers cut hair and shape beards one chair at a time. Every appointment is given the length the work actually needs, and the barber who starts a cut stays with it through to the mirror at the end.
The shop keeps a short, printed board of services rather than a long menu of extras. Clipper work, scissor cuts, beard shaping, hot towels and a gentle cut for young guests are all done on the same floor by barbers who ask how the hair is worn before they decide how to cut it. The price on this site is the price at the counter, and nothing is added at the chair.

Services and prices
Every service has a fixed, printed price and a realistic length. Each appointment starts with a short consultation, and a barber will say plainly if a different service would suit the hair better.
-
Signature cut
Price: $42
About 45 minutes
A consultation about how the hair is worn on an ordinary morning comes first, then a scissor and clipper cut worked to the growth pattern rather than to a photograph. The shape is finished dry, so the line that leaves the shop is the line that turns up the next day.
-
Clipper cut
Price: $34
About 30 minutes
A clipper-led cut through the back and sides with the top blended by hand, kept to one length or graduated into a taper. The guard numbers are written down at the first visit so the same cut can be repeated exactly next time.
-
Beard shape
Price: $24
About 30 minutes
The beard is shortened to the length asked for and squared to the jaw, with the cheek and neck lines set by eye against the face. A hot towel opens the skin before the razor touches the outline, and the moustache is cleared from the lip last.
-
Cut and beard
Price: $58
About 90 minutes
The signature cut and a full beard shape in one sitting with the same barber. The hair is finished first and the jaw line is set against it, so the two read as one shape instead of two appointments that happen to meet.
-
Hot-towel finish
Price: $18
About 15 minutes
A hot towel, a clean-up of the neck and outline and a light dressing worked through by hand. It is added to the end of a cut, or booked on its own around the third week when the edges have started to blur.
-
Young guest cut
Price: $28
About 25 minutes
A shorter appointment for a guest under twelve, worked at whatever pace the child sets with a parent or carer beside the chair. Each tool is named before it is switched on, and if the appointment stops early the price drops to what was done.
The question every appointment opens with
Tell me how the hair behaves on an ordinary Tuesday morning, not how it looked on the day it was cut.
How the shop works
Slow enough to ask what is actually wanted
- A consultation before any clipper is switched on
- One barber from the first cut to the final mirror
- Prices printed in advance, with nothing added at the counter
- Cuts finished dry, so the shape holds the next morning
Every appointment at Sable & Fourth Barbers starts with a conversation rather than a clipper. A barber asks how the hair is worn on an ordinary morning, what the last cut got wrong, and how long the shape has to hold before the next one. That is where most of the difference between two haircuts is decided, and it is the first thing to go when a chair is running behind.
The shop books one chair at a time for exactly that reason. An appointment is given the length the work needs rather than the length the diary would prefer. Nothing is bundled, nothing is upsold at the chair, and a service that would not suit the hair in front of the barber is said so before it begins rather than sold and regretted.
A first visit can expect a few minutes of talking and looking before anything is cut, a price that was already on the services page, and a finish checked dry. It should not expect colour or chemical straightening: Sable & Fourth Barbers is a barbershop, and it keeps to the work it does well.
Behind the chairs
The barbers
Four people run Sable & Fourth Barbers between them. Every barber takes every service on the board, and each has two that the shop sends their way first. A particular barber can be asked for by name in any message.
Rosa Delgado
Owner and lead barber
Opened Sable & Fourth Barbers and still takes the first chair on every day the shop is open, cutting scissor-led shapes to the way the hair actually grows and finishing them dry so the line holds the next morning.
Marcus Hale
Senior barber
Works the beard side of the board and the longest appointments in the diary, setting the jaw line against hair that is already finished and putting a hot towel on before a razor touches an outline.
Tessa Byrne
Barber and consultation lead
Reads the messages that come through the contact form and writes most of the replies, then takes the finishing appointments and the young guests, naming each tool before it is switched on.
Andre Collins
Shop coordinator
Keeps the diary so every appointment has the time it needs behind it, cuts on the busier afternoons and writes the guard numbers into the book so a second visit matches the first.

The work at the chair
Photographs of the trade Sable & Fourth Barbers belongs to: barbers at work, combs and clippers in use, and the tools kept within reach between appointments.
Said afterwards
What customers say
“My beard line came out level for the first time in years. It took longer than I had expected and that turned out to be the point: the neck line was measured against my jaw rather than guessed at somewhere off the collar, and the cheek line was set while I was sitting upright instead of tipped back. Three weeks on it is still growing out square.”
“My son does not like clippers and he was not made to have them. The barber named every tool before switching it on, worked with scissors at whatever pace my son was setting, and let him hold one of the combs for the last few minutes. It was over before he had got round to objecting, and the pair of them have been back twice since without any argument in the car.”
