The salon

A corner salon that books one table at a time

No. 01

Bramble & Paw Pet Grooming works on Thistle Street in Asheville, North Carolina. A small team of groomers works one table at a time, from a price list that says exactly what the counter charges.

From the first table

How the salon approaches a coat

Every appointment here starts with the hands rather than the clippers. A groomer goes through the coat first — behind the ears, under the front legs, along the belly and at the base of the tail, which are the four places matting starts — and asks what the coat does in the weeks between grooms rather than what it looked like on the afternoon it was last collected.

The salon books one table at a time for exactly that reason. An appointment is given the length the work needs rather than the length the diary would prefer, and the groomer who starts a dog stays with it through to the dryer. Nothing is bundled, nothing is added at the counter, and a coat that would be better taken short than combed out for two hours is said so before it begins rather than after.

A first visit can expect a quarter of an hour of handling and looking before anything is switched on, a price that was already printed on the services page, and a coat checked dry so what leaves the salon is what was agreed. It should not expect veterinary treatment, sedation, or a double coat shaved off to stop it shedding; those are listed further down, and they are listed because the answer is always the same one.

Standing rules

How the salon operates

  1. 01

The written price is the counter price

Every service on the board carries the figure the till takes. Where a price is marked “from”, the reason and the difference are quoted before the work begins.

  2. 02

The wrong service is refused, not sold

If the chosen service will not do what was asked for, the groomer says which one will. That happens in the reply to a message as readily as it happens at the table.

  3. 03

    One appointment, one groomer

The groomer who starts a dog is the groomer who finishes it. Nobody is handed between tables to keep a diary moving, and no dog is sent home half done because the hour it was written into ran out.

Where those rules came fromThey are the three things the salon was asked about most often in its first year, written down so that the answer does not change with whoever happens to answer the telephone.

Start to finish

What happens between the first message and the dog going home

  1. A message arrives

By form, email or telephone, describing the breed or the mix, how the coat is kept now and roughly when it was last groomed.

  2. A groomer replies

Naming the service that fits, the price and the length of appointment it needs. Replies go out during opening hours.

  3. A time is agreed

Fixed in that reply or through the Book action. Nothing before this point holds an appointment.

  4. The groom happens

Handling and a look through the coat first, then the bath and the dry, then the shape, and the whole coat checked dry before the dog comes off the table.

The limits

What the salon does not do

Bramble & Paw Pet Grooming baths, clips, hand strips and finishes coats only. There is no veterinary treatment, no sedation, no dyeing and no shaving of a double coat to stop it shedding, and nothing is carried out that belongs with a veterinary surgeon. The salon has two tables and no waiting area, so an agreed time is the only way to be sure of one.

Talk to the salon

Ask before making the trip

A message describing the coat gets a straight answer about which service fits, what it costs and how long it takes.

The column

A short note when the salon changes something

Holiday hours, a groomer joining or leaving, a price that moves. Two or three notes a year and nothing else.
