What customers have said

Six comments, each numbered and each linked to the service it refers to. Between them they cover what the bench is asked for most often: hems, jacket fittings, dress alterations and formalwear.

I brought in three pairs of work trousers that had sat unworn for two years because every one of them was an inch too long. The fitter pinned them over the shoes I actually wear with them, which mattered more than I expected, and spotted that one pair had a cuff that would need rebuilding rather than shortening. That pair cost more, and I was told so at the fitting rather than at the counter afterwards.

The dress had been bought online in a size that nearly fitted. The fitter was straight about what the seams would allow before anything was opened, which was less than I hoped at the waist and more than I expected across the back. The price was written down at the fitting and did not move. It came back sitting properly, and the alteration is invisible unless you know where to look.

A jacket needed taking in four days before a wedding and I expected to be turned away. What I got was an assessment instead: the side seams could be done in the time, the sleeves could not, and doing one without the other would look wrong. I took the side seams only. It was ready on the day promised, and nobody at the wedding noticed anything except that the jacket fitted.

I had never had a jacket properly fitted and did not know what to ask for. The questions came the other way round instead, about what I wear it over and how often, and the answers decided the work. Nothing was added that I had not agreed to first. The prices published on this website matched what I was quoted in the room, which is not something I can say about every trade.

The contact form asked for the garment and the change wanted and nothing else, and the reply came back with a question about the cloth rather than a sales pitch. I also liked that the site never pretended a time had been booked. The adjustment itself was quick, and the lining was moved with it instead of left puckered, which I gather is the part that usually gets skipped.

Formalwear was outside anything I had dealt with before and I turned up with a photograph and no vocabulary at all. The fitter talked through what the cloth would and would not do in plain words, then put the two realistic options side by side rather than steering me towards either. The decision stayed mine. The result matched the conversation closely enough that I have since sent two other people here.

Ask about a garment

A description of the garment and the result wanted is enough to start. The workshop replies with the times a fitting can be held.
